The Secret History Behind the Solomon Islands' Flag

The Solomon Islands' flag was adopted eight months before the country became independent.

It was adopted on November 18, 1977, replacing the British Blue Ensign. It has a thin yellow diagonal stripe from the lower hoist corner, with a blue triangle above and a green one below, and five white stars in the blue.

Blue stands for water and green for the land, and the yellow stripe is the golden rays of the sun. The five stars represent the five main groupings of the islands: Malaita, Central, Eastern, Western and the Polynesian Outliers. The number of provinces has grown since then, but the flag kept its five stars.

The date printed on every Solomon Islands design in our catalog, July 7, 1978, is Independence Day.
