The Secret History Behind Kenya's Flag

Kenya's flag carries a warrior's shield.

Black stands for the people of Kenya. Red for the blood spilled in the fight for freedom. Green for the land itself. White for peace between them all. And laid across the center, a Maasai shield crossed with spears — the traditional weapons and protection of one of Kenya's most iconic communities, standing guard over the whole design.

It was raised for the first time on December 12, 1963, the day Kenya became independent from British colonial rule — the date printed on every Kenya design in our catalog.

A flag that doesn't just describe a nation's fight for freedom in colors — it puts the actual shield and spears of that fight right at the center, standing guard to this day.
