The Secret History Behind Morocco's Flag

Morocco's flag was plain red for centuries, and a green star was added so it would not be confused with others.

From the 17th century, under the Alaouite dynasty, the flags of Morocco were plain red. A royal decree by Sultan Yusef on November 17, 1915 added a green interlaced five-pointed star, the Seal of Solomon, because the old flag looked too similar to other red flags, especially those used for maritime signals.

The red is tied to the lineage of the Alaouite family, and to courage and strength. The green star is read as the Seal of Solomon and as the five pillars of Islam, and green as hope and peace.

The flag stayed the same after independence in 1956.

The date printed on every Morocco design in our catalog, March 2, 1956, is the day Morocco's independence from France was recognized.

A star added so a flag could be recognized from far away.
