The Secret History Behind Namibia's Flag

Namibia's flag was born the same day as the nation.

Blue for the sky above and the Atlantic Ocean along its coast. A golden sun at the center for life and energy, radiating out over everything. Green for the land itself. And cutting diagonally across it all, a band of red bordered in white — standing for the courage and unity of the Namibian people.

Unlike most flags, which are designed years or decades before they're officially adopted, Namibia's was raised for the very first time on March 21, 1990 — the exact same day the country became independent from South Africa.
