The Secret History Behind San Marino's Flag

San Marino's flag has three towers, and each one has a name.

The flag has two horizontal bands, white on top and light blue below, with the coat of arms in the center. White stands for peace and light blue for liberty. It was officially adopted in 1862 and codified definitively in 2011.

At the center of the shield stand the Three Towers of Mount Titano: Guaita, Cesta and Montale. Above the shield is a closed crown, which shows sovereignty. On the sides are two branches, laurel for victory and virtue, and oak for strength. The motto is LIBERTAS, "freedom". The coat of arms probably dates back to the 14th century.

The date printed on every San Marino design in our catalog, September 3, 301, is the traditional founding date of the republic.

Three towers, one mountain and a one-word motto.
