The Secret History Behind Andorra's Flag

Andorra's flag looks like Romania's and Chad's, but it has a coat of arms in the middle.

It is a vertical tricolor of blue, yellow and red with the coat of arms of Andorra on the yellow stripe. The plain version without the arms was created in 1866, and the design was standardized in 1993, after Andorra joined the United Nations.

The coat of arms comes from an agreement made in 1278 between the bishop of Urgell and the count of Foix, who shared authority over the valleys. It carries the bishop's mitre and crosier next to the three red bars on yellow that belong to the count.

The date printed on every Andorra design in our catalog, September 8, 1278, is the date of that agreement.

Three colors and a coat of arms that remember a deal from the Middle Ages.
