The Secret History Behind Bulgaria's Flag
Share
Bulgaria's flag is described in the country's very first constitution.
After the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, the Principality of Bulgaria took the Pan-Slavic colors of white, green and red. The Tarnovo Constitution of April 16, 1879 states that the national flag is a tricolor arranged horizontally in white, green and red.
White is read as peace, love and freedom, green as the agricultural wealth of the country, and red as the struggle for independence and military courage.
From 1947 to 1990, the emblem of the communist state was placed on the white stripe. After the fall of communism, the original flag was readopted on November 27, 1990.
The date printed on every Bulgaria design in our catalog, March 3, 1878, is Liberation Day, still the national holiday.
Three stripes, a constitution, and an emblem that was taken back off.
