The Secret History Behind Grenada's Flag
Share
Grenada's flag has a nutmeg, because that spice is what the island is known for.
In 1973, Anthony C. George entered a national contest in preparation for independence and won both the flag and the coat of arms competitions. His flag was adopted on February 7, 1974.
The red border carries six yellow stars for the six parishes of the island, and a seventh star on a red disc in the center stands for the capital. The yellow and green triangles represent wisdom and agriculture, red stands for vitality, and the nutmeg, at the hoist, is the primary export and the one element kept from the previous flag.
The date printed on every Grenada design in our catalog, February 7, 1974, is Independence Day.
Seven stars, two colors and a spice.
