12 Countries Celebrating Their National Day in November

November is a month of independence days, from the Caribbean to Southeast Asia to Europe. Twelve countries in our catalog mark a founding or independence date this month. Here they are in calendar order, with the story behind each one.
November 1 — Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda became independent on November 1, 1981, after years as an associated state of the United Kingdom.
November 3 — Dominica, Micronesia and Panama
Dominica gained independence on November 3, 1978. Micronesia marks November 3, 1986, the day the Compact of Free Association with the United States took effect and the Federated States of Micronesia became a sovereign nation. Panama commemorates November 3, 1903, when it separated from Colombia and declared itself the Republic of Panama.
November 9 — Cambodia
Cambodia gained full independence from France on November 9, 1953, after King Sihanouk's campaign for sovereignty. It is celebrated every year as Independence Day.
November 11 — Angola and Poland
Angola proclaimed independence from Portugal on November 11, 1975, when Agostinho Neto declared the People's Republic of Angola. Poland celebrates National Independence Day on the same date, commemorating the restoration of Polish sovereignty in 1918 as World War I ended.
November 18 — Latvia
On November 18, 1918, Latvia's People's Council, led by Kārlis Ulmanis, proclaimed the independence of the Republic of Latvia.
November 25 — Suriname
Suriname became independent from the Netherlands on November 25, 1975.
November 28 — Albania and Mauritania
Albania proclaimed its independence from the Ottoman Empire in Vlorë on November 28, 1912. Mauritania became independent from France on November 28, 1960, when Moktar Ould Daddah received the transfer of sovereignty.
November 30 — Barbados
Barbados gained independence from Britain on November 30, 1966.
