The Secret History Behind Sri Lanka's Flag

Sri Lanka's flag carries a lion older than the country's modern name.

The sword-wielding lion at its center traces back to the island's ancient founding legend, a symbol of the Sinhalese people that predates the modern nation by centuries. Around it, four bo leaves — from the tree under which the Buddha is said to have found enlightenment — represent core Buddhist virtues: compassion, kindness, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.

The green and saffron stripes running alongside the lion were added later, honoring the island's Muslim and Tamil communities — a flag built, layer by layer, to represent everyone who calls the island home. The lion itself first flew over an independent nation on February 4, 1948 — the date printed on every Sri Lanka design in our catalog.
