6 Countries Marking a National Day in March

March is a month of revolutions and independence declarations, from the Indian Ocean to South Asia to Europe. Six countries in our catalog mark a national day this month. Here they are in calendar order.

March 12 — Mauritius

Mauritius became an independent state within the Commonwealth on March 12, 1968, with independence officially declared at a ceremony at the Champ de Mars Racecourse in Port Louis.

March 15 — Hungary

Hungary's National Day marks March 15, 1848, the start of the Hungarian Revolution against Habsburg rule — a day of student-led demonstrations, a printed list of demands, and the beginning of a war for independence.

March 20 — Tunisia

On March 20, 1956, France formally recognized Tunisian independence after two years of negotiations, ending 75 years of colonial rule. Tunisia was a constitutional monarchy at first; the republic was declared the following year.

March 23 — Pakistan

Pakistan's Republic Day commemorates two dates at once: the Lahore Resolution of March 23, 1940, which first called for a separate Muslim state, and March 23, 1956, when Pakistan adopted its first constitution and became a republic.

March 25 — Greece

Greece's Independence Day marks March 25, 1821, the start of the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule.

March 26 — Bangladesh

Bangladesh's Independence Day marks March 26, 1971, when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared independence in the early hours of the morning, just before his arrest. The Liberation War that followed lasted nine months.

Each of these countries has its own flag story and designs in our catalog. Browse the collections: Mauritius, Hungary, Tunisia, Pakistan, Greece, Bangladesh — or explore the story behind any country's flag on our free Flag Story Cards page.
