4 Countries Marking a National Day in May

May brings a mix of constitutions, resistance anniversaries and independence dates. Four countries in our catalog mark a national day this month. Here they are in calendar order.

May 3 — Poland

Poland's Constitution Day marks May 3, 1791, when the Sejm adopted Europe's first modern written constitution — a document that lasted barely a year before being overturned, but is still celebrated as a symbol of Polish statehood.

May 5 — Ethiopia

Patriots' Victory Day commemorates May 5, 1941, when Ethiopian resistance fighters and Emperor Haile Selassie's return marked the defeat of the Italian occupation that began in 1936.

May 14 — Paraguay

Paraguay's independence was declared on the night of May 14, 1811, and the celebration traditionally spans both May 14 and 15.

May 25 — Jordan

Jordan's Independence Day marks May 25, 1946, when the country gained independence from the United Kingdom.

Each of these countries has its own flag story and designs in our catalog. Browse the collections: Poland, Ethiopia, Paraguay, Jordan — or explore the story behind any country's flag on our free Flag Story Cards page.
