The Secret History Behind Argentina's Flag

Argentina's flag hides a revolution.

Light blue and white were first raised in 1812, during the fight for independence from Spain — some say the colors were inspired by the sky over Buenos Aires on a clear day, though the true origin is still debated by historians. What's certain is what came next: six years later, in 1818, a golden sun was added to the center of the flag. It wasn't decorative. It was meant to represent the same sun that, according to legend, broke through the clouds over Buenos Aires on May 25, 1810, the day the revolution against Spanish rule began.

Independence itself was formally declared on July 9, 1816 — the date printed on every Argentina design in our catalog.
