The Secret History Behind Bhutan's Flag

Bhutan calls itself the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

Its flag splits diagonally in two: yellow on top, for the king's authority and the secular life of the kingdom, and orange below, for the Buddhist faith that shapes daily life across the country. Across the diagonal, a white dragon — the Druk — stretches its full length, jewels clutched in each claw, representing the nation's wealth and perfection.

The dragon's snarl isn't a threat. In Bhutanese tradition, it's a promise — a guardian's vow to protect the kingdom, not an act of aggression. The kingdom itself was founded on December 17, 1907, the date printed on every Bhutan design in our catalog.
