The Secret History Behind Dominica's Flag
Aktie
Dominica has one of the few flags in the world with the color purple, and a parrot in the middle.
The flag was adopted on November 3, 1978, as the island prepared for independence, with small changes made in 1981, 1988 and 1990. It was designed by the playwright Alwin Bully.
At the center, a red disc carries the sisserou parrot, Dominica's national bird, in purple, ringed by ten green stars. Bully said the ten stars of the same size stand for the equality of Dominica's ten parishes and of every citizen. Behind them is a cross of yellow, black and white stripes on a green field.
The date printed on every Dominica design in our catalog, November 3, 1978, is Independence Day.
A parrot, ten stars and a purple that Dominica made its own.
