The Secret History Behind Spain's Flag

Spain's flag was chosen to be seen from far away.

In 1785, King Charles III held a contest of sorts among his naval officers, looking for a new ensign to replace the white flags most European navies used at the time — flags that were nearly impossible to tell apart from a distance, especially in battle or fog. Charles picked red and gold specifically because the combination stood out at sea like no other flag of the era. It worked. Spanish ships became instantly recognizable, and the design spread from the navy to the nation.

Spain's national day looks even further back than 1785, though — to October 12, 1492, the day Columbus's voyage reached the Americas and changed the map of the world. That's the date printed on every Spain design in our catalog.
